1) Small Dairy Farmer success story
Mr. Barjesh Ranjan is aged about 35 years’ young and energetic rural youth residing at Ibrahimpur village of Muzaffarpur District. Initially his family was suffering from crisis and hardly get education up to intermediate. In 2006 he has taken training on Artificial Insemination from regional demonstrations and training centre of NDRI at Siliguri . After getting the training of Artificial Insemination he has becomes interested toward the dairy farming. Meanwhile he came in contact with the Scientist of KVK, Saraiya, Muzaffarpur and was advised to attended a training on dairy farming. He has ubsequently started dairy farming with one desi cow and one heifer. Gradually he become interested to increase the number of cow and now having 55 animals including 35 cows and 25 their followers. He was recognized by different agency like Best milk producer award by TIMUL, Sudha,Muzaffarpur 2008, recognition award through ATMA,Muzaffarpur ( Documentary film) in the year 2010.
In his dairy farm most cows are crossbreed( Jersey, HF) and some Desi ( Sahiwal). Now milk yield is about 300 lt per day which are sold as a fresh milk to Sudha collection centre and as milk product also like paneer,cream and curd. He actively involved in management of dairy farm and artificial insemination work side by side among the neighbouring village. Near the dairy farm house he grow green fodder round the year and fed them to their animal for minimize the cost of production of milk. Now Mr. Ranjan become very popular among surrounding villages as a dairy boy. He becomes example of successful small dairy farmer. His farm is equipped with primary veterinary aid laboratory, Sudha collection centre and artificial insemination centre. He is earning about 6 lakh per year through dairy farming and also producing vermicompost as a side business.
2) Role model for small farmers
Sri Dinesh Kumar, a 45 year young and energetic farmer decided to do such things which can make rural farmer’s economical status better. After completing his matriculation, he never thought for a job. His only internal aim was to do something for his family, village & other rural farmers to improve their income. He also came from agricultural background and had seen the difficulties faced by the farmers.
In the year 1991, he acquired 8 acres of land on lease which other farmer refused due to low fertility. Using different techniques and technology he harvested a very good crop in that field. He maintains this series but was not satisfied. The crop area was increased to 52 acres in 1997.In the year 2001, he came to contact with Haryana farmers and shifted to there and started vegetable production on lease land. Then the Haryana govt. sends him to Thailand for training on organic farming. Returning from there he decided to do complete organic farming. On 2004 he went to JAPAN sponsored by govt. of India for training on agricultural implants and marketing. Then he started self marketing of his produces viz. vegetables and milk. Back to his native in 2006 he started convincing to villagers for organic farming. Now a day, his village became the largest organic vegetable producer of North Bihar.
The thirst for latest technologies diverted Mr. Kumar to visit KVK Saraiya, Muzaffarpur in 2009 to learn various techniques through training programmes. The scientists of KVK and RAU university also guided the path for development of IFS model and organic vegetable production. At present he is actively involved in vegetable (30 acres), fruits (Banana -10 acres, Litchi- 4 acres), Sugarcane (20 acres), Paddy/ wheat seed (9 acres) production, dairy (50 cows and followers) , poultry (4500 birds), and fish farming (1 hac.). The dairy farm house well equipped with bio gas and solar plate system which is used for lighting and running chaff-cutter, Grinder machine for concentrate mixture and pumping set etc.
3) Land less farming through mushroom cultivation
Lal Babu Prasad Kushwaha of Kanti Kothia village with a holding of 1.5 acres was not satisfied with planting traditional crops like cabbage, cauliflower ,potato and other vegetables. His quest for newer agricultural enterprises to supplement income from his farm took him to the RAU, Pusa samastipur and KVK, Muzaffarpur. Detailed interaction with expert on his farm, he was advised him to take up mushroom cultivation as a profitable venture.
After a foundation training at the RAU, Pusa, Samasipur,a determined Mr. Kushwaha started mushroom cultivation and preparation of different mushroom product.
Lal Babu harvested more than 5 kgs of mushroom per day which increased his income by Rs. 42000 way back 2012, which has been steadly growing thereafter. With the active involvement of his family, Singh also moved ahead with value addition by starting production of mushroom pickles, papad, sebai, pakouda, Laddu, Peda etc. He began supplying to market. Inspire by his accomplishment, 15 other mushroom growers have now joined him collectively and formed as “ Dhanbarsa sabji krishak hitarth samooh” and sell their products under Dhanbarsa sabji krishak hitarth samooh.Now a day he harvested more than 20 kgs of mushroom per day which increased his income by Rs. 300000.00 yearly.
Lal Babu Prasad Kushwaha is a fitting example of a successful entrepreneur who has gained through innovation and effort, learning back after a day’s hard work, he plans further expansion of his business and spawn production. 4) INNOVATIVE SUCCESSFUL FARMER: ON RCT TECHNIQUES
Sri Ramashankar Singh aged 55 years is a progressive highly educated farmer of village Chainpur in Madwan, Muzaffarpur district. After completion his doctoral degree in economics he involved in agriculture with an interest. Total cultivable land available with the family is 8 ha. He received many awards i.e. Kisan Sri Award ,2007 by Govt. of Bihar, Araize Sartaj Samman, 2011 by Bayer
Crop Science company and Swami Sahjanand Sarswati Samman, 2015 by Rastriya krishi dinkar academy,Muzaffarpur .Sri Singh having rich resource and infrastructure for their livelihood. He is a laborious innovative farmer applying new techniques in field. He came in contact with KVK, Muzaffarpur 6 years back and then continuously getting technical support and guidance from the center. He has attended several trainings/ awareness camp at different institute, RAU, Pusa and others palaces. After develop interest in cultivation of crops through RCT. He became very much impressed by the KVKs activities and started his works under the supervision of scientists. He was motivated by the Scientists to adopt the line sowing technique with zero tillage seed drill cum fertilizer machine. As Sri Singh is very innovative and sharp farmer so he use in own brain in using ZTSD machine for sowing oilseeds and pulses and cereal in 2014. It was his first experiment and he produced record production of mustard and green gram as 17 q/ha and 8.5 q/ha respectively in adverse climatic condition. District agriculture and other agriculture official also visited his farm and if climate will be favorable he will raise the production through Zero till seed machine up to 20 q/ha. By getting inspired the neighboring villagers also started to cultivate oilseed and pulsed through Zero Tillage Machine. His experiences in line sowing with zero tillage seed drill machine is telecasted by different channels. He has also shared his achievement through participation in KISAN PANCHAYAT in 2008., KISAN SAMAGAM, Patna 2012 and national convention 2013, Gujrat The annual income is about 6 lakhs by production of field crops.
Now he become role model farmer to other farmers in neighboring area for new techniques application in field crop production.
5) From poverty towards hope: Successful poultry farming
Sri Sanjeet Kumar basically matric passed was struggling to full fill the need of family members. Having influenced by KVK, Saraiya, Muzaffarpur activities in terms of training, practical demonstration, visit and other things. He started with 300 chicks of broiler poultry birds in his premises in February, 2010. Gradually he has expanded his farm capacity & at present having 18000 birds capacity by making 3 sheds of double story farm house facilitated with automatic water drinker. The KVK, Saraiya continues in providing the technical knowledge like of farm visit, good management practices (GMP), feeding management and assured marketing channel to support such a progressive farmer.
With his own capacity, enthusiasm and technical intervention now he became one of the popular poultry farmer in broiler farming within a short period of time. Now Mr. Kumar has been producing 6000-8000 broilers bird in one batch and 7 batche per year. At present his net profit is about Rs. 70-80 thousand per batch and getting income Rs. 6 -7 lakh per year from poultry farming. He is supplying the birds to Muzaffrapur, West Champaran and other district’s wholesaler. At his farm house four local rural youths are working.
He is quite an example for local youth in and around. Looking at his success more number of unemployed educated youth has been motivated to take up the broiler poultry farming for employment and income fast generation. By looking success and income his farm house becomes a training centre for the neighboring farmers. He has further tied up with different poultry company to supply chicks, feed and medicine on credit basis to the number of farmers in the villages. Now he is going to expand the poultry farming with other species like Quail farming and goat farming side by side .
6) Person can rise by any challenges
Sri Satish Dwivedi is a progressive farmer a Sakari Chandpura in Bandra Block of Muzaffarpur district.After completion of post graduation degree he choose to come back to his ancestor house with 20 acre of land and concentrated on farming. Being accustomed academic research the first thing Mr. Dwivedi did was a thorough study of the latest agricultural practices that was appropriate for his farm. By his pointed and pertinent queries he created a mark for himself among scientists in Rajendra Agricultural University, Bihar Pusa Samastipur. He started seed production programme under Bihar Rajya Beej Nigam,Patna from 1983 to 1997. After closing of BRBN he came and contact with scientist of IARI,Pusa, Samastipur and again started seed production of wheat, lentil, coriander, Rai etc. Earliest Mr. Dwivedi use to bring his seeds for sale in local market. When he started to grow in large scale the neighbouring villagers came to know the quality of his seed by visiting his field. Being popular for quality seed production the farmers use to come his village and purchase the seed. He has also motivated other farmer’s throughout the district. He came in contact with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Muzaffarpur during 2007 and meet and know about how to reduce the cost of cultivation through farm mechanization.
He purchaged agricultural implements like Rain gun, lazar leveller, Zero till seed drill cum fetilizer machine, combine harvester for use in cultivating cereals, pulses, oilseeds and other horticultural crops to reduced the cost of cultivation. Not satisfied with these efforts he also invested in dairy unit.
The system of Rice intensification and intercropping practices raised his cropping intensity to 300 percent. His success motivated other farmers in his area and as many as 1200 of farm families have come forward for mechanized agriculture like DSR, Zero tillage wheat, Sowing of different crops like Lentil, Green gram, Rai etc through zero till seed drill cum fertilizermachine. He is shining example that an informed and educated person can rise by any challenges. For his this achievement he got Kisan Bhushan award in 2007, Pragatisheel krisak award 2011 and Udyan Ratna award 2011.
7) A journey from bangle wearing to bangle making
Smt. Savita Devi resident of Rupauli village in Muzaffarpur district is mother of four children at the age of 25 and her washerman husband hardly earn enough to feed her family. She was landless , so wandering what she should do to improve her family income. In 2009 she came in contact with KVK through JEEVIKA to know about some income generating business for women. Here she knew about Mushroom cultivation, Lac Bangle, Food processing e.t.c. As Muzaffarpur district is famous for lac bangle business so she choose it because its making process was simple and economic. In every festival and marriage women wear lac bangle, so there is no marketing problem. Now she was very eager to get trained in this occupation. As she was simple but active and sharp so learn its making process and started this business only by Rs. 8000.00 and purchased all necessary items of bangle making. Now every year she purchases raw material of Rs. 10,000.00 in five batch of Rs. 2000.00 each batch and sell it in Rs. 4000.00 in each batch. So, each year she earns Rs. 10,000.00 in addition to doing household activities. The nearby villager know about her business so she is not compelled to go outside for its sell. In 2015 she took proper training from KVK, Saraiya and came in contact with department of small industry for microfinance.
Her future plan is to start a training centre cum shop for Lac bangle in Saraiya town. As she belong to scheduled cast, land less and having very poor economic status so she is arol model for those women who are socially and economically backward.
8) Income generation : sustainable agriculture production
Sri Maheswar Rai aged about 60 years is a progressive farmer of Ballisaraiya in Saraiya Block of Muzaffarpur District. He has 15 acres of land for his livelihood. He is a hard worker and innovative farmer. He joined with KVK since establishment and then continuously getting technical support and guidance from the center. He was motivated by the scientists of KVK, Mzaffarpur in 2005 to adopt the Seed production technique of paddy and wheat under Public Private Partnership seed production program. Now Sri Rai is growing paddy seed production (R.Bhagawati,Rajshree,Vaidehi) under technical supervision of KVK in 4.5 acre of land. He participated in several trainng programme organized by different government agencies ( NHM,ATMA and KVK in different fields(crop production, vermicomposting,Dairy farming, Mushroom cultivation etc. Sri Rai is a member of different agencies like NFSM,ATMA governing board, water management board and SAC member of KVK.
At present, he is promoting for vermi-composting, seed production, and Dairy. for getting good income generation and sustainable agriculture throughout the district .
Sri Rai become very popular as vermicompost producer and established Lakshmi vermi udyog for selling their product.
He earns Rs 7.0-8.0 lakh/ annum by adopting seed production ,vermicompost and dairy farming. He received Kisan Samman award 2002 by govt of Bihar on for successful farmer.
9) Confidence in Agriculture change her life
Smt. Rajkumari Devi, popular as Kisan Chachi and Cycle chichi is a resident of Anantpur village in Muzaffarpur district. She is the only women farmer in her state who has officially been honoured with the title of Kisan Shree in 2006 -07 and the union ministry of Agriculture has also captured her inspiring story in a documentary. She was also honoured with 6th Aaadhi Abadi Women Achievers Awards 2014 and many more. Married to a farmer who used to do tobacco farming on his village, Rajkumari devi inspired her husband and villager to make swith from tobacco to litchi, banana and papaya. When her family was facing economic problem she plunged in to farming in 1980s inspite of lots of resistance from her family and villager.
Turning point in her life had come, when she started cultivating Elephant foot yam/Jimeekand/ Ole on commercial basis. In 1996, she was handpicked by Home Scientist, KVK, Saraiya and she sent her to Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa to brush up her knowledge. Under the supervision of expert, she started generating high yielding variety seed and Litchi and Rose product. In addition to cultivating Elephant foot yam/Jimeekand/ol, she started to prepare pickle and other dishes from it. Today she is making 22 -23 type of pickle and murrabba which is sold through Kisan mela in all over India. In this context she got first second and first price in 2011,2012 and 2014 respectively in Kisan mela organized by RAU,Pusa,Samastipur for stall. She also get award in horticultural exhibition organized by RAU,Pusa in 2011,2012 and 2013.The net income through different type of pickle from Mango, Litchi, Aonla, Karaunda, Elephant foot yam/Jimeekand/ol, Jack fruit, Red chilly, Mushroom, Bittergourd and Aonla pachak, Mix pickle was Rs. 1,59,000 in 2014. She has also been taken on the National Food protection mission of Government of India and is a brand ambassador of Bihar to propagate benefits of commercial farming and women participation.Her keen interest in horticultural crop can be understood by getting first price in Udyan mahotsava 2011 for mango, second prize in horticulture exhibition in brinjal, Radish and cabbage organized by department of Agriculture in 2011. She also got second prize in for banana,potato and ole in 2010 during Vaishali mahotsava
She also gathered women farmers belonging to schedule caste and schedule tribe to form 36 self help group of 350 ladies and with their cooperation she became a popular entrepreneur in pickle making by the brand name of “KISAN CHACHI”
10) Always try to new things with smile
Mr. Vikash Kumar, a 19 year young and energetic farmer decided to do such things which can make rural farmer’s economic status better. After completing his metric schooling, he never thought for a job. His only internal aim was to do something for his family, village & other rural farmers to improve their income. He also came from agricultural background and had seen the difficulties faced by the farmers.
In the year 2012,Mr. Kumar of Basudeopatti village of Saraiya block with a holding of 2.5 acres was not satisfied with planting traditional crops like Paddy,Wheat,Maize,cabbage, cauliflower ,potato and other vegetables. His quest for newer agricultural enterprises to supplement income from his farm took him to the RAU, PusaSamastipurand KVK, Muzaffarpur. During a detailed interaction with expert on his farm, he was advised to take up mushroom cultivation and Spawn production as a profitable venture.
After a foundation training at the KVK,Saraiya determined Mr. Kumar started mushroom cultivation, Spawn Productionand preparation of different mushroom product.

Now a day he has harvested more than 20 kgs of fresh mushroom,75 kgs Spawnper day which increased his income by Rs. 7,00,000.00 ye arly. He sell spawn locally and to other district also. Mr. Kumar is a fitting example of a successful entrepreneur who has gained through innovation and effort, learning back after a day’s hard work, he plans further expansion of his business and spawn produc tion. “Always try to new things” to the experts and then take steps based on all the information you have gathered. His name is famous in the district as “Mushroom Boy”.
